The Writing Center at American University
The Writing Center at American University offers free, peer-based writing support for all currently enrolled undergraduate and graduate students. In 45-minute consultations, writing consultants meet with students to provide insight and feedback on your writing in order to improve the work at hand as well as strengthen your own writing and editing abilities.
Statement on Linguistic Justice
The Writing Center at American University acknowledges the racial history upon which the university systems, structures and rules in which we teach and learn were built. We reject discrimination, intolerance and racism in all of their manifestations. We reject bias based on visible and perceived identity and all forms of linguistic supremacy and discrimination. We strive instead to create and maintain a safer and more inclusive space for our community and those with whom we work. We acknowledge that language and identity are intertwined and honor the value and the power of all World Englishes.
All appointments are scheduled and managed through WC Online. We also use this platform to host our online sessions.
About WC Online: WC Online allows you to see which use which consultants are available and when, read their bios, and schedule and manage your appointments. Online sessions are also accessed here. All currently enrolled undergraduate & graduate students are welcome at the Writing Center, no matter your academic, cultural or linguistic background.
All students are welcome at the Writing Center, especially our international friends! Our consultants are not language or grammar instructors, but can still be an asset to you as you learn U.S. academic writing norms and develop your language & writing skills.
The Writing Center does not advise students on career writing (resumes, application letters, CVs, or cover letters) as our specialty is in academic writing. However, the AU Career Center will be happy to help you in this regard.
The Writing Center is only as good as its team of talented writing consultants! Part-time positions are offered to current undergraduate and graduate students. We train and support our staff and set up a schedule that is right for them.
